Happy Summer PBC,
I hope you are all enjoying a little cooler weather! Boy, we had some hot days~ Speaking of hot, the kids have been cooking (that is their slang for crushing it). We started our summer program in June and we’ll end with a trip to Canadian Henley.
Our first regatta was Independance Day Regatta. We took our full roster of U19’s and U23’s. What a great start to the summer (despite the hot, rough water, and rain delays). PBC juniors and U23's with the help of the Men’s and Women’s Sweep team and the Potomac Scullers took third in the overall points.
Our boys u19 2x that represented PBC at junior national team trials had a go down the course and was very competitive with the other 2xs that were headed to trials the next weekend. Both boys, Tony Madigan and Tarek Khalifa raced the 1x and made finals as well as the 2x. Tony finished 2nd in the 1x and Tarek finished 5th. We had a second boys 2x that qualified for finals, but scratched so they could be fresh for the men’s U19 4x showdown with Penn AC. Penn took the boys for the watch, but they sure had a great race! We did walk away with some great results and a big shout out to the U23 women for winning the watch and crushing the competition!
Tony and Tarek headed off to NJ the following weekend along with JM (U23 1x) for MegaWorld trials. MJ raced well and got knocked out in a competitive semifinal. Tony and Tarek finished 3rd in the time trial and during the final were competing for 2nd place overall when a crab hit - the boys settled for 4th. Both boys are rising seniors and have another year to compete at that level!. It was a great experience for both of them.
This past weekend, we took all the U19s to the Philly Youth Regatta. What an amazing day. We went in thinking let’s put together our top quads on the girls and guys side (for Canadian Henley practice) and then have some fun with the rest of the entries. Here is what happened:
First up was the Men’s U19 4xs
Men’s U19 4x A - won their flight and fastest overall time (besting the Whitemarsh boat that finished 2nd at youth nationals in June).
Men’s U19 4x B Quad - won their flight and had the 7th fastest time
The women were not to be outdone by the guys
Women’s U19 A 4x - won their flight and had the fastest overall time and bested both the Neried and Oak Neck boats that represented the Mid Atlantic region at Youths.
Women’s U19 B4x - won their flight and has the 3rd overall fastest time out of all the flights.
The rest of our results are below:
Men’s U17 2x - won their flight and fastest overall time
Women’s U17 2x - two entries, both won their flights and went 1, 2, in the overall times
Women U19 2x - two entries, went 1 and 2 in their flights
Men’s U19 2x - two entries - went 1 and 2 in their flights with times in the top 3
Men’s U19 1x’s - finished 1 and 2 in their flights and had the 2nd fastest overall time
Women’s U19 1x - both finished 2nd in their flights with top 3 overall times!
Men’s U19 8+ (just because - caught a crab on the way to the start and rowing a 7 - still finished 3rd!)
Women’s U17 4x - finished 2nd in their flight with the 2nd fastest overall time!
Men’s and Women’s 1x dash - a couple of wins, a couple of 2nds, and lots of fun racing 500 meters!
We put together some fun mixed boats
U17 mixed 2x - 2 entries, both won their flights and finished 1, 2 in times
U19 mixed 2x - 2 entries, 1st and 2nd in their flights, top 3 times
U19 Mixed 4x - 2 entries, finished 2nd and 3rd
U19 Mixed 8+ - won!
So, as you can see it was a hardware filled day. This led to a phone call from Bonnie. She wanted the whole team to come down to the awards tent ... .and present us with the Benjamin Franklin Points Trophy. This is the first time Ben has traveled to Washington DC - we are so proud of our kids and coaches. The trophy is sitting on the table in the boardroom - go check it out!
This could not have happened with the coordinated effort of both our race program, board of governors, and club program. Many of our master athletes and equipment traveled to OKC. We have so much gratitude for the support PBC has given our summer program.
Next up, our top U19 and U23 athletes head to Ontario to see how we stack up!
